How to screen peptide-related properties in cosmetic science models while separating formulation observations from consumer or medical claims.

Cosmetic research is formulation research
A peptide study in cosmetic science may examine compatibility, stability, skin-model responses, barrier-related markers, or sensory properties of a prototype. The result depends on the whole formulation, not on the peptide name alone.
Variables to record
Document pH, preservative system, surfactants, oils, polymers, container material, light exposure, temperature, and the peptide's concentration basis. A peptide can bind to excipients or the container, hydrolyse, oxidise, or change conformation in a formulation, so stability should be assessed in the final matrix.
Use fit-for-purpose models
Simple chemical stability testing, reconstructed skin models, ex-vivo tissue, and user studies are not substitutes for one another. Define what each model can support before starting. If a screening assay measures a marker, state that marker rather than turning it into a broad claim about appearance, ageing, or skin health.
Compare prototypes fairly
Use a matched control formula without the test peptide, keep application amount and frequency consistent, and randomise or blind image analysis where practical. Include replicate preparations and record the lot number, because a new batch may have a different analytical profile or handling history.
Regulatory language matters
Research-use-only peptides are not finished cosmetic products and are not approved for direct application to people. Any later product-development or marketing claim requires its own safety, regulatory, and substantiation review in the intended market.
